This dish blends the flavors of string beans with tomato sauce, cinnamon and walnuts – to delicious results. Its spiciness comes from freshly ground black pepper accenting the cinnamon instead of from some form of red pepper and the turmeric only adds to the warm blanket of flavor surrounding the beans. | Strawberry Banana Ice Cream |
This is an adaptation of an original David Lebovitz recipe. I didn't have enough strawberries, plus I didn't want the sugar count. The secret ingredient here is sour cream. Here in Costa Rica we use natilla instead of sour cream. It's so much different and SO much better! LOL... In the US, I would use Mexican Crema - it will have the same consistency and flavor. COOKING TIME is macerating time. -- posted by Jostlori |
| Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream |
Made this the other night for a coworker's birthday the following day. Made her so happy, I feel bad having kept half the batch at home! If you put the graham crackers in at the beginning, they will be blended into the ice cream, giving it a grittier texture. | Dressed Bananas |
When I was a kid I never went to a card party or gathering of any kind without seeing dressed bananas on the table. My Dad alone would go through at least a banana and a half!! People would ask my mother to make these and bring them as a dish for potluck parties, so I was in charge of smearing on the mayo. They sound odd when you read the ingredients, but just give them a try. I loved them then, and I have to admit, I make them every now and again now! Of course now I choose a healthier mayo :) -- posted by CookingBlues |
| Dolly's Banana Liqueur |
Costa Rica is one of the original Banana Republics, which probably explains the many types of bananas growing on our property. And of course, they all ripen at the same time! I can't believe a traditional "Veggie Sanger" has not been posted!
"No Worries Mate"................ I am here to fix that!
Vegemite sandwiches are terrific for school lunches, and used to be an Aussie Tradition, not so long ago but not so sure about now.
Vegemite is high in Vitamin B .....but it is quite salty so it probably not considered a health food as such because of the saltiness. But they do not go soggy like a lot of sandwich's do at school!
A Vegemite sandwich is a quick and easy snack for both kids and adults. All you will need is bread and butter or margarine .......and of course that jar of black gold "Vegemite! "
Of course you can add things if you prefer, like cheese or avocado!
Even use crumpets instead of bread, for an amazing snack.

| Easy Peanut Butter Fudge |
A simple peanut butter fudge. No thermometers needed, just a timer. The original recipe called for 2 cups of light brown sugar; I didn't have any, so I used part dark brown and part white. Do NOT try to use "natural," "organic," unsweetened or salt-free peanut butter for this, it will fail. If you like sweet-salty things (as I do), use salted peanuts on top; if you don't, unsalted will work fine. Adapted from CHOW - http://bit.ly/19a9OLj -- posted by DrGaellon |
| Spiced Strawberry Syrup ( and Shrub Recipe) |
Adapted from a Saveur recipe. It is spicy, but the combination of heat and sweet fruit is ambrosial; use half the spices if you are nervous about the heat level. Save the macerated strawberries to use in smoothies, a sweet fruit salsa for topping ice cream or cake, or use it to make some jam (I put the drained pulp right back into the pan I use to cook the syrup, add a little water, Triple Sec, citrus juice, and cook it down until it's thick and sets when tested on a cold plate). Shrubs are old-time summer drinks made with vinegar, fruit juice, water, and sugar, incredibly refreshing with mild acidity and sweetness. This is NOT a canning recipe! NOTE: A shallow saucepan will evaporate more liquid, but this mixture will foam up and OVERFLOW a shallow pan when brought to a boil, so either keep right on top of it or use a deeper pan. -- posted by Zeldaz |

| Papa's Favorite Sweet Cornbread |
My father grew up with fond memories from his youth of the down home cooking of his mothers and sisters. When he dropped over one evening for an impromptu visit, I invited him to join us for a simple dinner built around some homemade sweet cornbread that I had just taken from the oven. My apologies to him for our simple (very non-company) type dinner were enthusiastically waved aside as he devoured a surprising number of cornbread squares! At the end of our meal, he declared that my cornbread was not only delicious, but had the exact tasted and texture of the cornbread that his mother used to fix for him…I can’t imagine a nicer endorsement than that! He passed on a number of years ago and I miss him terribly, but every time I fix this cornbread, it puts a smile on my face just remembering the many cornbread dinners that Dad and my family enjoyed together after that! -- posted by Likkel |

| Atar -- Scented Simple Syrup(Qatar) |
This syrup is a traditional feature of Middle Eastern sweets and pastries. It’s essentially a sugar syrup that is used to bathe, soak or sprinkle on various sweets. It’s scented with orange blossom water, rose water or both. These distilled essences are widely available in the Middle East, and they are increasingly available in the West. This recipe is from Qatar, which is bordered by Saudi Arabia.
The syrup is very easy to make, and the proportions vary depending on desired thickness. Water and sugar are boiled with a little lemon juice to prevent it from crystallizing. The orange blossom water or rose water is stirred in at the end of cooking. Any sooner can weaken their aroma.
When the syrup is used for making pastries, it must be added when the pastries are already baked, fried or cooked. Cold syrup is added to hot pastries. It’s either poured onto the pastry or the pastry is dipped for a moment, then lifted out. Recipe from Arabic Zeal. -- posted by Sharon123 |
| Apple for Breakfast |
This is more like an idea for quick, healthy breakfast. This is so much more satisfying than eating a simple apple. An apple gives you a lot of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Also, the apple and cinnamon regulate your blood sugar. The nut butter and walnuts give you protein, and chia seeds and walnuts give you omega-3 fatty acids needed for healthy brain and heart.
